Theodahad

King of the Ostrogoths (q.v.) from 534-536 whose downfall resulted from his ineffectual defense of Italy (q.v.) against Justinian I's general Belisarios (qq.v.). Theodahad's brutal overthrow of Amalasuntha (q.v.), an ally of Justinian, provided the emperor (q.v.) with a pretext to invade Italy. Belisarios's capture of Naples (q.v.) in 536, after a siege of only 20 days, prompted the Ostrogoths to replace Theodahad with Vitiges (q.v.). Theodahad fled to Ravenna (q.v.), where an agent of Vitiges killed him.
